1930s deco vintage clothing from a Lane Bryant Slenderizing vintage fashion catalog

If you love 1930s vintage fashions as much as I do, you will be just as excited to see this original 1934 fall style and fashion book by Lane Bryant. A leader in womens larger size clothing even in the 1930s. The colors of the pages in the catalog are as fresh as they were years ago.

Fabulous vintage  early 1934 and 1935 fall and winter vintage  fashions are shown for the larger lady which shows that plus size clothing even in the 30s was stylish and up to date with what was happening in the fashion world.

So yes, larger sizes were available and not at all dowdy or old lady looking.

I have a large inventory of plus and larger sized clothing from the 1930s through the 60s to add to Bettes Bargains Vintage clothing shop in the near future.

Below are a few photos from the book and some items from my shop that mirror these styles.

A tale of two dresses!

What can be better than a LBD – a LONG Black dress of course! Here we have TWO figure-hugging dresses from opposite ends of the fashion world – the only common denominator is the necessary requirement to have the BODY to wear them!

The first dress in from Frank Usher, basically Englands equivalent to Victor Costa! Turning out good quality versions/copies of dresses from the Paris runways – this stunning dress is totally covered in black sequins and black beads (the silver effect in the image is from the camera flash on the sequins!). It is a head-turning dress not just because of the shimmer and light it will give off, but from the way it will most certainly accentuate that fabulous body inside it!

The second dress is from the upper end of the fashion scale – a fabulously simple yet incredibly stunning dress by ISSEY MIYAKE, the famous avant garde Japanese designer! Very similar in appearance, this dress relies solely on its simplicity to achieve that same head-turning moment as you and THAT BODY walk by!! In a very thin, figure-hugging lightweight ribbed wool this dress clings and moulds in such a way you would be in serious danger of losing every one of your girl-friends!

Classy Holiday Wear!

This Holiday why not go for something out of the ordinary with that simple classy elegance that personifies the word “chic” :

1960s Cresta Couture evening dress in a black matelasse (textured) fabric which has a silver ‘dusting’ giving at a discreet sparkly effect. The ‘sedate’ neckline plunges to a deep V-shape at the back and is trimmed with a 2″ wide strip of soft white fur. Even better this is for a bust 42″ and is in Excellent condition!

Purple beaded dress

Just look at the understated yet sheer elegant purplw beading on this dress! In a heavy-weight grosgrain fabric, amazingly there is no tag or label! Beading in every shape and size decorates the bodice, but the ‘wow’ factor is the pleated panel at the back skirt!

Mad for plaid

Fashion might be suggesting an austere season of minimalism in neutral greys and camel, but, as much as love a bit of pared-down elegance, when the leaves start falling I always seem to reach for the plaids.

Plaids have a sense of tradition and the warming comforts of nostalgia.  They can be startling and bold, or subtle and muted.  And they can provide a lively counterpoint to those severe neutrals in an outfit fit to brave those chilly winds.

You can find all the vintage plaid pieces below at TinTrunk right now.  (Serving suggestions added, but by no means obligatory – have fun with them!)

1980s olive green plaid jumpsuit

Vintage 80s olive green plaid cotton jumpsuit.

I’m seeing this jumpsuit warmed up with a shearling bomber jacket and tucked into some chunky ankle boots (flats or heels would work equally well).

1980s Jaeger green plaid pleated skirt

Vintage 80s Jaeger green plaid pleated skirt in pure new wool.

This pleated wool plaid skirt would look fabulous with a cape or a tailored jacket, and maybe a prim roll-neck (for UK readers a polo neck) sweater – preferably cashmere!

1960s-70s black and white plaid knit poncho

Vintage late 60s-early 70s black and white plaid knit poncho.

Throw this poncho over just about anything!  Its wonderfully versatile, and fits all sizes.

1980s red and black plaid long culottes

Vintage 80s red and black plaid pleated culottes.

These dramatic, 3/4-length culottes look fabulous with knee-high boots.  You could play on their cossack style with a wide sleeved jacket.

With Fall in the air it’s time to get sewing!

Fall is upon us and winter isn’t far behind so it’s past time to get moving on all those sewing projects that include girl’s jumpers, boy’s coats, matching skirts and jackets, womens wardrobers, men’s shirts and don’t forget womens coats. You’ll find everything you need no matter the season at Born Too Late Vintage Patterns!
