As the end of summer nears I am starting to think about what I will be wearing this season to all of the party’s I hope to be attending, should I wear a Little Black Dress or something with color to show off my tan that I was lucky enough to find the time to achieve this summer while juggling running a flooring store and maintaining my vintage clothing biz , the one thing I do know for sure is that it will definitely be vintage!

Proudly Wearing Grandma’s Frumpy Old Vintage House Dress

If you’ve ever thumbed through old family photos of our grandmothers and great grandmothers looking at what they were wearing you might be thinking that you wouldn’t be caught dead wearing a frumpy old house dress, but the way our bodies and fashion styles have evolved what may have looked frumpy back then on our grandmothers suddenly doesn’t look so frumpy now……

Pairing these cute little frocks up with a wide belt, a sweater thrown over the shoulders and some casual summer wedges and your sure to be a head turner!

Below picture is of my family in Belmar, New Jersey in 1949

And the beautiful woman standing second from the right with her arms crossed is my grandmother Nicolina, the woman standing in the back by the door is my great-grandmother Giovanna, and as you can see most of the women are wearing house-dresses, boy would I love to raid those closets now if they were all still alive, you do know that old school Italians never throw anything away, never!

More Color Trends for Summer 2012

We told you in our last blog that we would be doing a follow up on the color of Summer along with the dress trends.

It is impossible to imagine summer without bright colors like orange, yellow and red but during Spring/ Summer 2012 fashion season these won’t be the only hits. Caramel hues which include lilac, coral, cream, peach and banana will be as hot as the above-mentioned essentials. Aquamarine, nude and classic white and black are the lovely and necessary additions to the color scheme. Read full article about.

While some will be from our Hawaiian Collection, there also be some for you main landers. Enjoy the Eye Candy.

Fun and Easy – Make a 1920s Costume from Vintage & Thrift Store Finds

I'm ready for my close up, Mr Demille

We were recently invited to a Roaring Twenties Party which gave me the opportunity to come up with a 1920′s costume for my hubby and myself. I did not want to wear authentic vintage 20′s clothing, as they are much too fragile for a night of partying.

It’s really fun and easy to do using items you can find at your local thrifts or second hand stores. Accessories can be purchased at local party or costume stores or bought on line on ebay or other sites.

I’m gonna tell you how I made ours. So, here goes.

BEFORE

My costume started with a beaded dress from the 1980′s era found at a Goodwill. One of those “made in India” types that are so prolific in the thrifts now days. Fully beaded on sheer silk with a lining and with sheer 3/4 length sleeves. Here’s what it looked like before – basically a straight cut dress with scoop neckline and a feathered hemline.

I cut off the sleeves just below the seam and then took some of the cut off fabric and made about 2″ wide strips with were placed around the shoulder strap area and pulled the strap up in a ruched style. Made a slit up one side to above the knee “to show a little leg”. And that’s basically it. Then you just add accessories like long beads, a sparkling headband made from a piece of sequined braid available at any fabric or craft store. Pop a feather in the band – peacock feathers were a favorite of the era. Dangling earrings in a deco style found at a yard sale, black or fishnet hosiery and a long cigarette holder bought on ebay. Feather boa from my costume stash, but you can buy them online or in a costume shop.

Oh, a wig is great to, but not necessary if you can style your own hair. I used a blonde curly wig that I already owned.

So, here’s the after:

AFTER

Sorry about the pink shiny face, but it was quite warm at the party.

I decided to do hubby’s costume in the “Gatsby” style instead of the standard gangster, because I knew it would be warm and a suit would be a little much. We started with a pair of light slacks with a thin pinstripe, by Liz Claiborne from a thrift store. These I turned up the hem at the legs and made a cuff. Buttons were added to the inside of the waist band to accommodate the button on suspenders.

Gatsby Style

on suspenders, which also were found at a thrift. The blue and white shirt with white collar and french cuffs was made by cutting the collar and cuffs off a white shirt and sewing them onto the blue stripe shirt. Both shirts, again, from a thrift. Hat was a cheap light weight summer panama that I removed the madras band from and added the black silk band. Finish off with a light color wide tie. This one a light silvery gray a thrift store find.

And what about shoes?

Both our shoes were modern shoes found at a thrift. Mine are a T-Strap with low heel. They were originally beige, but I spray painted them with that wonderful Meltonian brand shoe spray dye that I bought on ebay. Hubbys shoes were a pair of oxblood wing tips. Again, re-colored with vanilla and light brown shoe spray dye to make them into spectators. This is a bit tricky, as I had to tape off the white area first and spray on the brown. Then removed the tape, and hand painted the white area.

Well, that’s about it. We all had a grand time. Here are some of the other guests in their costumes. Enjoy!

"STAR" hostess and owner of the Starlite Lounge

"LUCKY" the host and owner of the Lucky Dog Speakeasy w/ Gatsby

Ruched Bodice Beautifully Designed Dresses

Ceil Chapman was among those who succeeded in adapting Christian Dior’s “New Look” for relatively affordable cocktail wear targeted toward the American ready-to-wear market.  She was the Queen of ruching which are tiny folds/pleats incorporated into a dress bodice horizontally or diagonally.

Ceil Chapman was reportedly Marilyn Monroe’s favorite fashion designer.  She provided the trousseau for Elizabeth Taylor’s 1950 wedding to Conrad “Nicky” Hilton.  Other celebrity clients included Deborah Kerr,  Greer Garson, Grace Kelly and Aretha Franklin.

We honor and adore her designs.  Scorpio Vintage is proud to offer these Special Occasions dresses, that while they are not a Ceil Chapman, they incorporate the delicate ruching in the bodice, and would be perfect for the upcoming HOLIDAY PARTIES.

Make Your Fall Season Colorful!

Love the yummy fall colors – they’re rich but soft and not brash at all. I favor the phlox purple, but if you’re like me and a bit conservative, you will not want to wear a large piece like a dress or pants outfit all in purple. The fix, is to pick accessories in the new colors or a print that incorporates one or more. We have these suggestions on our website.

Fall Fashions – Cooler Weather is Coming!

I know it’s August, and here in Arizona it’s hard to realize that Fall is just around the corner; but it will be here before you know it, and I thought I’d take advantage and get a head start.  My new site Scorpio Vintage has already listed some lovely vintage items.  So here’s my fashion Fall Forecast.

Don Sayers for Wellmore designs have the classic look of St. John Knits, but are much more affordable. Here’s a stunning Little Black Dress with exquisite shoulder & neck embellishment

Next we have a Hand Knit Dress done in a beige wool boucle yarn with shoulder & upper bodice accent in a metallic copper.  Shoulder are done in a Pointelle stitch.  Bombshell Beauty.

Next, we’ve got some Squared toe stiletto pump with color blocks of very fine suede.  This is a much finer & softer suede than you see today.

Next is an Escada 80′s Window pane plaid skirt in a wool blend.  Slim pencil style done in a red tone on tone color.  Classic simplicity.

We hope that you’ll visit our new site.  Click on the pictures to go to the listing.

Summer Sets = Versatility

Summertime seems to be vacation time, and what better way to get mileage out of your wardrobe, than to take along a couple of sets, that can double up with skirts or slacks.

Scorpio Vintage offers some delightful combinations that could easily be paired with other items.

Going to a wedding, and need a more formal outfit?  Here’s a 60′s silk ribbon dress with matching jacket.  Dress can be worn alone, and jacket could do duty with another dress.

Another possibility for a more casual situation is this colorful, go with anything skirt & blouse set.  The skirt is full & tiered and the blouse is a wrapped crop top.  With this many colors to choose from it could be matched with almost anything.  Great vacation versitility.

Here’s another fabulous set, this one is from Hattie Carnegie, done in a jewel all over pattern.  Multi colors throughout make this another great choice for pairing with other blouses, skirts or slacks.

Last is a lovely skirt & jacket set from Vittadine Sports in a silk like fabric with a hot air balloons.  Print reminds me of a silk scarf & is so silky  to the touch!
