I always love the pictorial scenes on fabrics. They show a village scene, a feast scene, sometimes it’s a bit closure with several people. The Savage “Feast” painting that depicts the Hawaiian feast is probably the most famous and was used for the menu cover by the Matson line. Highly collectible, and much sought after. While we at THE HULA HUT don’t have that beautiful print, we do have lots of scenic, pictorial shirts for the men in your life.
This one is for the kiddies, lets not leave them out!
Here’s a mens shirt showing the famous Diamondhead along with beautiful fish….Angel fish to be specific
This one is a take off on the “Savage” feast print
This one has the lounging Wahini. Really bright colors on a black background
Many couple chose Hawaii for their nuptials, and what could be more romantic than a wedding ceremony on a sunset beach. While traditional attire may be the choice of some, many couples want to get into the full flavor of the islands and so choose matching sets.
The Hula Hut has a couple of beautiful vintage sets, and I must tell you that these are getting harder and harder to come by.
First is a lovely deep turquoise set with silver and gold silk screened pattern. The women’s dress is the prized Pake Mu design and the groom is dressed in a short sleeve shirt.
Second is a highly colorful floral print done on an aqua back ground with deep purple hibiscus. The fabric is the every popular barkcloth. Set is from Pomare, and is from the late 50′s.

The Aloha shirt is a style of dress shirt originating in Hawaii. It is currently the premier textile export of the Hawaii manufacturing industry. The shirts are printed, mostly short-sleeved, and collared. They usually have buttons, sometimes as a complete button-down shirt, and sometimes just down to the chest (pullover). Aloha shirts usually have a left chest pocket sewn in, often with attention to ensure the printed pattern remains continuous. Aloha shirts may be worn by men or women; women’s aloha shirts usually have a lower-cut, v-neck style. The lower hem is straight, as the shirts are not meant to be tucked in.
Aloha shirts exported to the mainland United States and elsewhere are called Hawaiian shirts and often brilliantly colored with floral patterns or generic Polynesian motifs and are worn as casual, informal wear. The Hula Hut provides Vintage along with more modern & current Hawaiian Trends, such as the every colorful Jams World. Barkcloth is a versatile material that was once common in Asia, Africa, Indonesia, and the Pacific. Barkcloth comes primarily from several tree varities. It is made by beating sodden strips of the fibrous inner bark of these trees into sheets, which are then finished into a variety of items. Many texts that mention “paper” clothing are actually referring to barkcloth.
Presently, barkcloth or bark cloth is a soft, thick, slightly textured fabric, so named because it has a rough surface like that of tree bark. This barkcloth is usually made of densely woven cotton fibers. Historically, the fabric has been used in home furnishings, such as curtains, drapery, upholstery, and slipcovers. It is often associated with 1940s-through-1960s home fashions, particularly in tropical or Hawaiian prints, along with the ever popular abstract, “atomic” and “boomerang” prints. Today if you can’t get an authentic vintage barkcloth you can always resort to the authentic reprints from several manufactures. The HULA HUT is proud to present several of our currently listings that utilize vintage barkcloth in both women’s & men’s fashions.

In vintage we all have different “Holy Grails”. For the collector of Hawaiian textiles, Alfred Shaheen is the master & is credited for popularizing the Hawaiian Shirt. His hand painted fabric captured the flora & faun of the Hawaiian islands as well as the tribal traditions. He not only produced the fabrics but also created clothing with fabulous full skirt sundress, sarong dresses, swimsuits & of course the ever popular men’s shirt! He was easily one of the best known Hawaiian & garment manufactures of the 20th century & his work spans from the 50′s to the 80′s! Here are some current Alfred Shaheen dresses being shown on The Hula Hut
